Life After SMP: What Edmonton Men Experience After Their Treatment
There's plenty of information out there about what SMP is and how it works. But not enough is written about what comes after — the day-to-day reality of living with SMP results, how the healing process unfolds, and what men genuinely experience once their treatment is complete.
This post is about that part of the journey.
The First Few Days After Each Session
Directly after an SMP session, the scalp will look darker and more defined than the final healed result. This is completely normal. The pigment sits slightly raised in the skin initially and will soften and settle as the scalp heals over the following week or two.
During this period, a few guidelines apply:
- Keep the scalp dry for the first four days — no swimming, heavy sweating, or washing the treated area
- Avoid direct sun exposure on the scalp while it's healing
- Don't pick or scratch any flaking skin — this is a natural part of the healing process and interferes with pigment retention if disturbed
- Moisturise gently after the first few days to keep the scalp in good condition
After about a week, the treated area will look lighter than it did immediately after the session. This is expected — the pigment is settling into its final depth in the skin. The full result becomes clear once all sessions are complete and fully healed.
The Weeks Following Completion
Once the final session has healed — usually within two to three weeks of the last appointment — the result is effectively complete. This is when most men have their first real experience of the finished look.
Common reactions at this stage include:
- Noticing how natural it looks in different lighting conditions
- Realising that the people around them simply think they shave their head
- Feeling less self-conscious in situations where hair loss previously caused anxiety — photos, social events, professional settings
- Spending significantly less time thinking about their hair when getting ready in the morning
The last point is one that comes up consistently. Hair loss occupies more mental space than men often admit — the constant awareness of angles, lighting, and what other people might be noticing. SMP removes that background noise for a lot of men.
Maintaining Your Results
SMP requires very little ongoing maintenance, which is one of its practical appeals. A few habits help preserve the result over time:
- Sun protection — UV exposure is the main factor that fades SMP pigment over time. Using SPF on the scalp when outdoors, especially during Edmonton summers, extends the life of the treatment noticeably.
- Scalp moisturising — A well-hydrated scalp holds pigment better and keeps the result looking its best.
- Regular shaving (for men with remaining hair) — Keeping existing hair closely cropped helps the SMP blend seamlessly and maintains the intended look.
When Will a Touch-Up Be Needed?
SMP pigment naturally fades gradually over time, just as all semi-permanent cosmetic procedures do. Most men find their results remain in excellent condition for three to five years before a touch-up session is worthwhile.
A touch-up is typically a single session that refreshes the pigment and restores the crispness of the original result. It's not a full re-treatment — just a maintenance visit to keep things looking sharp.
The Bigger Picture
It's worth being straightforward about something: SMP doesn't change who you are. What it can do is remove an ongoing source of self-consciousness that was quietly affecting your confidence, your comfort in social situations, and the mental energy you were spending on something you had no control over.
For a lot of men, that's meaningful. Not life-altering in a dramatic sense — but genuinely positive in the quiet, everyday way that matters most.
